Our History
Christian Assembly was founded in 1971 by Pastor Derrel Emmerson, to be a place where believers would have the freedom to operate in the gifts of the Holy Spirit as demonstrated in the New Testament.

Since that time, the church has continued to be an active presence in Northern Virginia and abroad.

Although we are a non-denominational assembly, we have chosen to be in relationship with Vanguard Ministries for the purposes of apostolic oversight, accountability, counsel and fellowship. www.vanguardmnistries.org

Vanguard Ministries is a network of churches and leaders bound together by a common DNA of vision and values who have made the quality decision to walk in the unity of the Spirit. We are to be an organization which is established and maintained along relational lines — not hierarchical authority."
--Bobby Hill, Founder & International Director

Vanguard Ministries' mission is to assist churches, ministers, and Christian leaders to fulfill their God-given destiny--spiritually and strategically, through a network of nurturing relationships and practical resources.

Our Vision
To Reconcile people to God.
To Raise them up in the likeness of Christ.
To Release them into the gifts, ministries and callings prepared in advance for them.
To Reflect God's glory in all we do.

Our Core Values (Who We Are)
1. Biblical Authority
In that the Bible is the inerrant authoritative Word of God, containing all truth and revelation of God, we strive through teaching, study and ministry to equip Christians with a knowledge and understanding of the Word. We do this to base our lives on Jesus Christ, the solid rock, to be unmovable and constant, able to withstand any attack and advance the Kingdom of God. 2Tim 2:15, 2Tim 3:16-17.

2. New Testament Living
We believe that the Holy Spirit transforms lives from death to life. We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit equips the saints through spiritual gifts (miracles, gifts of healing, faith, tongues, interpretation, prophecy, word of knowledge, word of wisdom, discerning of spirits) thus furthering the Kingdom of God on earth. 2 Cor 5:17, 1Cor 12:7-12.

3. Worship and Praise
Our church is a place of exuberant and celebrative worship. Songs and praise that bring glory to God is our delight. We express to Him our love by entering into His presence with joy and thanksgiving. Psalm: 150.

4. Prayer
We are committed to continual Spirit-led prayer and intercession both corporately and individually. We believe in the power of prayer and that God responds in the miraculous. We seek to listen and commune with Him as He longs for intimate dialogue with us. James 5:15,16.

5. Outreach Evangelism and Cross-cultural Missions
We have an open heart and mind to share Christ with our families, friends and neighbors. We seek to go ourselves and/or to facilitate others in reaching the lost and needy in our neighborhood, our region and among other cultures and nations of the earth for Christ.
Matt. 28:19,20.

6. Relationships and Encouragement
Christian Assembly is a local part of the worldwide Body of Christ. We are a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural, multi-gifted blend of His body. We are committed to genuine unconditional love for one another and desire to be changed into the likeness of Christ. We meet as a whole church as well as in small intimate groups and individual gatherings for healthy nurture, friendship, discipleship and accountability with each other. We thank God for diversity and seek to foster it. Heb. 10:24,25, 1 Thess 5:11.

Our Statement of Faith (What We Believe)

We believe what the historic creeds teach:

We see the Church:

To this end we teach:

  • The Scriptures are the only rule of life and practice, and we are to be consistent in reading and studying them. (Joshua 1:8)
  • That all Christians must be participants and not spectators in the propagation of the Gospel and the representation of Christ and His work. (Revelation 1:6)
  • That we live to give and give to live. (Luke 6:38)
  • That discord and dissension among born again believers is sin. (Matthew 18:15-20; John 17:20-21)
  • The life of prayer. (Matthew 6:6)
  • Praise and worship as indispensable for the Spirit filled life. (Ephesians 5:18-20)
  • All petitions are to be offered to our benevolent Father in faith and with thanksgiving. (Philippians 4:6)
  • That following Christ requires a death to our self-life and our love of the world. (Philippians 3:7-11)
  • That Christians are to be in the world but not of it. (John 17:13-19)
  • That sanctification is the process of surrendering to the control of the Spirit of God working in us and not the result of human effort. (Romans 8:9-11)
  • That healing is covered in the atonement. (Isaiah 53:4-5; Romans 8:11)
  • That the abundant life of total prosperity is available to the believer. (III John 2)
  • That to achieve any result in God, we must hear God and that what we hear must be consistent with the Scriptures. (Hebrews 4:12-13)
  • That God is sovereign in all His actions and therefore commands rather than submits to the commands of men. (John 3:8)
  • That God is benevolent, fatherly, loving, and that He always wishes to bless His children with good gifts. (Luke 11:11-13)
  • That God places His delegated authority in the church but that they are to be obeyed willingly, through trust, and not because of intimidation or coercion. (Hebrews 13:17)
  • That the greatest work a Christian can do is to impart all he knows of Christ to another person. (Matthew 28:19)
  • That the knowledge of who Christ is in you supersedes knowing who you are in Christ. (Colossians 1:27)
  • That the greatest among his people are those whose chief motivation is serving. (Matthew 20:25-28)
